Hearts to Hands: Bringing Comfort and Compassion to Children at Banner Children’s Hospital

At the Armer Foundation for Kids, we believe kindness can take many forms. Sometimes it looks like financial support for a family in crisis. Sometimes it is a helping hand during an overwhelming season. Other times, it comes in the form of a beautifully hand-painted care bag filled with comforting items to brighten a child’s hospital stay.
That is the heart behind the Hearts to Hands program.
Led by Sofia Hileman, an inspiring sophomore at BASIS Ahwatukee, Hearts to Hands is a beautiful example of how compassion, creativity, and community can come together to make a meaningful difference.
Sofia has completed more than 100 individually hand-painted care bags for children receiving treatment at Banner Children’s Hospital, pouring her heart, creativity, and time into every one.
Each bag is uniquely painted by hand, transforming something simple into a personal gift filled with love, encouragement, and hope. With every brushstroke, Sofia sends an important message to a child facing a difficult medical journey:
You are seen. You are supported. You are not alone.
But these care bags offer even more than cheerful, colorful designs.
Each bag is thoughtfully filled with items selected to help children feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. The bags include beautiful handmade quilts created by the Ahwatukee Charity Sewers, along with other comforting items designed to bring warmth, entertainment, reassurance, and a small sense of home to a child’s hospital room.
These lovingly sewn quilts add an especially meaningful touch. Each one represents hours of work and the kindness of community members who want children and families to know that people throughout Ahwatukee are thinking about them.
For a child receiving medical treatment, comfort can mean so much.
Hospital rooms can feel unfamiliar and intimidating. Children may be separated from their friends, classrooms, activities, pets, and normal routines. Their days may be filled with appointments, tests, treatments, procedures, and uncertainty. Parents and caregivers also spend long hours worrying, advocating, and remaining strong for their children.
A handmade quilt can feel like a warm hug.
A hand-painted care bag can brighten a hospital room.
A thoughtfully selected comfort item can provide a welcome distraction.
A simple message of encouragement can remind a family that an entire community is standing beside them.
These moments may seem small, but to a child or parent experiencing a difficult hospital stay, they can mean everything.
A Young Leader Making a Difference
Completing more than 100 hand-painted bags requires an extraordinary amount of patience, commitment, and heart. Sofia has spent countless hours designing and painting each bag so that every child who receives one feels special.
Her leadership through Hearts to Hands is a powerful reminder that young people do not have to wait until adulthood to make a difference.
Sofia recognized a need and found a way to use her artistic abilities to help. She transformed her creativity into a mission of compassion, bringing together people of different ages and talents for one important purpose: helping children facing life-altering medical conditions feel less alone.
The partnership with the Ahwatukee Charity Sewers makes the project even more meaningful. It demonstrates what can happen when students, volunteers, crafters, donors, local organizations, and community members work together.
Every painted bag, handmade quilt, donated item, and financial contribution becomes part of something much larger—a community-wide expression of love and support.
At the Armer Foundation for Kids, we are incredibly proud of Sofia and grateful for the kindness she has poured into Hearts to Hands. We are equally thankful for the Ahwatukee Charity Sewers and everyone who has contributed items, time, talent, and resources to help fill these special care bags.
More than 100 children will receive not only a care package, but also a reminder that their community cares about their well-being.
How You Can Get Involved
The Hearts to Hands program continues to grow, and community support makes every care package possible.
There are several meaningful ways individuals, families, students, schools, businesses, clubs, and community organizations can participate:
Donate to Hearts to Hands
Financial donations help the Armer Foundation for Kids purchase comfort items, activity supplies, care-package materials, and other necessities for hospitalized children.
No donation is too small. Every contribution helps place another comforting item into the hands of a child who needs encouragement.
Purchase Needed Items
Supporters can also purchase requested items through the program’s Amazon Wish List. These donations help fill the hand-painted bags with age-appropriate activities, comfort items, and other thoughtful gifts for children and teenagers receiving hospital care.
Create Something Handmade
People who enjoy sewing, painting, knitting, crocheting, crafting, or creating encouraging cards can use their talents to support Hearts to Hands.
Volunteers may help create blankets, decorated pillowcases, hats, activity kits, handmade cards, and other approved gifts. All donated items must follow hospital safety and infection-control requirements so they can be safely delivered to pediatric patients. (Armer Foundation for Kids)
Organize a Community Project
Schools, classrooms, youth groups, businesses, service organizations, retirement communities, and neighborhood groups can organize their own Hearts to Hands project.
A group might host a card-making event, collect care-package supplies, create handmade gifts, sponsor bags, or raise funds to help the program reach more children.
Share the Mission
Community members can also support Hearts to Hands by sharing the program on social media, inviting friends to participate, and following the Armer Foundation for Kids at @armerfoundation. The program encourages supporters to share their crafting projects and acts of kindness using #HeartstoHands. (Armer Foundation for Kids)

From Our Hearts to Their Hands
Hearts to Hands is more than a care-package program.
It is compassion in action.
It is creativity with purpose.
It is a community coming together to make sure children feel more comfortable, supported, and loved during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
Because of Sofia’s vision and dedication, the generosity of the Ahwatukee Charity Sewers, and the support of our community, more than 100 children will receive a special reminder that people are thinking about them and cheering them on.
Together, we can continue delivering comfort, hope, and love—from our hearts to their hands.
